Mitali: From Sewing Sacks to Welding Success
With the right support, a woman from Maharashtra finds financial independence.
Mitali from Maharashtra’s Nashik could only study till Grade 9 as she had to drop out of school after her father’s demise, which left her family in financial distress. Despite the challenges, her family began discussing her marriage and at 24, she got married and moved to Pune. She, however, returned to her hometown after facing abuse from her husband and being unable to find work due to a lack of skills.
Determined to support her family, Mitali started sewing sacks, earning just Rs 70 for every 100 sacks. Despite her limited education, she never gave up hope.
In 2023, her life took a new turn when through a Pratham mobilization event, she learned about a welding course offered at its Skilling Centre in Nashik. Welding, often viewed as a physically demanding and male-dominated trade, initially made Mitali hesitant to join the course. The counseling sessions provided by Pratham, however, helped her and other girls in her community challenge these stereotypes and recognise the opportunities available in the field.
Mitali enrolled in the course in September 2023 and completed it in November with hard work and dedication. Her efforts paid off when she secured a job as an assistant welder at Mahindra & Mahindra, earning a monthly salary of Rs 13,430.
Mitali’s journey is a powerful example of resilience and the transformative power of education and opportunity. Today, she stands as an inspiration, proving that determination and the right support can help overcome even the toughest obstacles.
